2010 Women's Soccer Season Preview

2010 Women's Soccer Season Preview

The 2010 Lady Falcons will be the most talented team in the women’s soccer program's young history.  The 2010 Lady Falcons have a great mix of upperclassman and newcomers which should produce the most exciting season the program has ever seen.  They return their top scorers from 2009 in senior forward Samantha Gigliotti (Wolcott, CT) (14 goals, 6 assists) junior forward Krystal Quinones (Bridgeport, CT) (13 goals, 5 assists), and sophomore forward Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT) (9 goals, 8 assists).  All three strikers were in the top ten in scoring in the GNAC last year while Samantha Gigliotti earned 2nd Team All-GNAC.  “All three players are extremely dangerous and it makes us very difficult to contain.  Anyone of them can score at any moment,”  stated Head Coach Nick Wajnowksi.

The midfield looks to mix veterans with newcomers.  Senior Captain Jenna Riccio (North Branford, CT) will look to anchor the midfield along side freshman Amanda Roke (Chesire, CT).  While junior Brittany Geremia (North Branford, CT) and freshman Sam Corso (Derby, CT) will create opportunities from the outside.  Adding into the depth of our midfielders will be sophomore Kelly Marchito (West Haven, CT), sophomore Victoria Rodriguez (Coventry, RI) and freshman Meghan Loughman (Trumbull, CT) who will all be very dangerous in the starting lineup or off of the bench.  “We want our strength to be in the midfield this season.  We have 7 or 8 girls who can all play anywhere in the midfield and that is a luxury we have not had.  Riccio and Geremia bring a ton of experience and talent and will help move our freshman along at a quicker pace.  Roke and Corso are extreme talents and they will be expected to learn on the fly.  Getting Marchitto back after sitting out last season with an injury is very essential for us.  She has the ability to be a game changer,” said Wajnowski.

The back line will be expected to deliver again for the Lady Falcons this year and will look very similar.  Junior Sarah Boudreau (Pascoag, RI) who was 2nd Team All-League last year, sophomore Jillian Rix (East Lyme, CT), and sophomore Sam Farley (Shelton, CT) will be expected to elevate their games even further this year playing in front of our All-League Senior Captain GK Christina Oddo (East Haven, CT).  “Our backs are tough, smart, and dangerous and I expect them to continue that this fall,” stated Wajnowski.

Coach Wajnowski expects his 2010 squad to battle for a top four seed.  “With our returning players along with the newcomers we can be a very dangerous team.”  The women’s soccer program brought in 9 recruits this off-season and they will be relied upon throughout the season.  “This might be the most talented and deepest recruiting class we have had.  They have adjusted quickly to the college game and I am excited to see what they can do.”  With all the positive energy within the program Coach Wajnowski and Coach John Adams just want to get the season going.  “We are ready to play some games and see what we have.  We have something special here.  It may take some time for people to see but it will happen and it should be exciting for all of us," said Wajnowski.

The Lady Falcons open their 2010 season on September 1st in Worcester, MA against Clark University at 6:30 pm.
