Roke Leads Falcons in 4-1 Win Over Saint Joseph College

Amanda Roke (Cheshire, Conn.) scored two goals and tallied an assist as Albertus Magnus defeated Saint Joseph College (Conn.) 4-1 in a Wednesday afternoon GNAC women's soccer match-up at Celentano Field.

Albertus received contributions from multiple Falcons as both Krystal Quinones (Bridgeport, Conn.) and Brittany Geremia (Northford, Conn.) scored their first goals of the year. With the victory, Albertus (4-1, 2-0 GNAC) improved to 2-0 in conference action.

Before today's match, the Blue Jays (3-2, 1-1 GNAC) had outscored its opponents 18-0 in back-to-back shutouts. The Falcons attacked the Saint Joseph defense immediately, putting an early goal on the board in the seventh minute as Roke sent the ball into the box where a Blue Jay defender missed on her clear attempt. Quinones got her foot on the ball and sent it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Albertus continued its aggressive first-half play as the Falcons' scored their second goal in the 26th minute as Geremia intercepted a defensive clear by the Blue Jays and placed her shot just out of the reach of the Saint Joseph goalkeeper.

The Falcons went into the half-time break with an 8-1 shot advantage.

Roke's two scores both came in the second half to extend the Falcons' lead to 4-0. In the 69th minute of play, Rebecca Slivinsky (Plainville, Conn.) sent a pass to the far side of the field where Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) crossed the ball into the box to find Roke. Roke was able to shoot over the reaching Blue Jay goalkeeper for her first goal of the contest.

The sophomore's second goal was unassisted as she made multiple cuts at midfield to position herself for a shot just outside of the 18-yard box. Her shot was drilled at the net and bounced off the crossbar but landed behind the goalkeeper for her third goal of the season.

Saint Joseph got on the board in the 86th minute as Dayna Gambino got a hold of a blocked shot by teammate Kelley Downey and tallied the Blue Jays' lone goal of the contest.

On the afternoon, the Falcons outshot the Blue Jays 16-14, while Albertus goalkeeper Christina Dineson (Milford, Conn.) faced 10 shots on goal. She tallied nine saves in her second win of the season as well. Saint Joseph's Holly Mirabella allowed four goals but stopped seven shots in 90 minutes of work.

Albertus returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17 as the Falcons host Saint Joseph's College of Maine in a 1:00 p.m. conference match at Celentano Field.
