Falcons Rout Anna Maria on the Road, Win 7-0

The Albertus Magnus women's soccer team scored five goals in the first half en route to a 7-0 shutout of the Anna Maria AMCats in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons, now 6-1-1 on the year, are unbeaten in their last six contests.

Seven different Falcons scored in today's match as Albertus outshot the AMCats (1-7, 0-4 GNAC) 40-1 on the afternoon, including a 21-0 clip in the first half.

Senior Kelly Marchitto (West Haven, Conn.) scored the Falcons' eventual game winner in the fifth minute as teammate Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) earned the assist on the play as Figueroa put a cross into the box, which found Marchitto for the score.

Figueroa then tallied her third goal of the year and the 28th of her career 1:14 after Marchitto's goal to give the Falcons an early 2-0 lead.

Shelley Mirmina (Milford, Conn.), the Falcons' team-leader in goals scored this season, netted her fifth goal of the year at the 12:13 mark in the first half. Marchitto earned her team-best fifth assist on the play.

Meaghan Skidmore (Terryville, Conn.) also got in on the scoring action as she registered an unassisted goal in the 18th minute to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead. Freshman Acacia Nelson (Bridgeport, Conn.) also scored in the first half as her third goal of the season came unassisted as well.

After the break, the Falcons added two more goals to take a 7-0 lead. Sarah DiCenzo (Wallingford, Conn.) scored her first goal of the year in the 59th minute of play. Freshman Renae Johnson (Bridgeport, Conn.) netted her first career goal for the Falcons to cap Albertus' scoring run.

Christina Dineson (Milford, Conn.) earned the victory in net for the Falcons as she split time in goal with teammates Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) and Ryan Clark (Milford, Conn.).

Anna Maria goalkeeper Sarah Benvenuti made 22 saves in net, while Erica Neugartern collected the only shot of the afternoon for the AMCats.

The Falcons will head North on I-91 on Saturday to face the University of Saint Joseph in a 1:00 p.m. league match-up in West Hartford. The Blue Jays are 6-1 on the year and are currently on a six-game winning streak after defeating Saint Joseph's College of Maine 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
