The Albertus Magnus women's soccer team fell to Worcester State 2-1 in the Falcons' 2014 season opener in Worcester, Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons suffered a hard luck goal when junior goalkeeper Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.)  came out of the net to make a stop and briefly lost control of the ball on the ground.  Junior Beth Spinazzola (Westford, Mass.) kicked the loose ball right to sophomore Kendal Bergenholtz (Grafton, Mass.) who found the back of the net just 3:45 into the contest.

Albertus Magnus knotted up the game 1-1 in the 21st minute by taking advantage of a penalty kick rebound off of the post.  Sophomore Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) saw her penalty kick hit the left post, but freshman Shannon Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) followed up the post rebound scoring her first collegiate goal.

The Falcons would open the second half with two great scoring chances off of corner kicks.  Murphy and freshman Kaitlyn Fedumenti (Stratford, Conn.) saw each of their shots turned away by junior goalkeeper Jillian Witkowski (Leister, Mass.) to keep the contest tied.

Senior Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, Mass.) netted the eventual game-winning goal in the 54th minute after receiving a pass from fellow senior Alyssa Sawyer (West Springfield, Mass.).  Evans dribbled across the baseline before finding the back of the net.  The Falcons would not manage another shot on goal for the remainder of the contest as Worcester state would hold on for the eventual 2-1 victory.

Case finished the contest with two saves, while Worcester State's Witkowski tallied three saves in the shutout.

Albertus (0-1, 0-0 GNAC) will travel to MCLA on Monday, Sept. 1 for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
