Late Rally Falls Short for Women's Soccer in 2-1 Setback at Elms

Chicopee, Mass. – A late rally fell short for the Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team on Saturday afternoon, as the Falcons lost to Elms, 2-1, in non-conference action at Leary Field. With the loss, Albertus Magnus moves to 0-1-1 on the year, while the Blazers won their second straight home tilt to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Trailing 2-0 midway through the second half, the visitors cut the deficit in half courtesy of a goal by junior midfielder Taylor Rotella (Milford, Conn.). Sophomore midfielder Victoria Lavery (West Haven, Conn.) set the play up nicely to register her first career assist. In two games this fall, Lavery leads the team with three points thanks to a goal and an assist. Rotella's 80th minute-marker was her first of the season and brought the Falcons within one.

With less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation, Albertus made one final push to tie the game. Senior forward Acacia Nelson (Bridgeport, Conn.) fired a shot on goal that was turned aside by Elms goalkeeper Alexa Rinaudo.

The hosts opened the scoring late in the first half as Brie Voight came in on a one-on-one with Albertus senior goalkeeper Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) and beat her for her second tally of the autumn.

The Blazers added to their lead in the 70th minute thanks to a Mackenzie LaRochelle goal.

Both teams took six shots in the contest and Albertus took six corners compared to the Blazers three.

In goal, Case made four saves in a losing effort for the Falcons to move to 0-1-1 this year. On the opposite end, Rinaudo stopped four shots to earn her second consecutive win.

Nelson had a team-best two shots on goal for Albertus Magnus, while Rotella, freshman midfielder Kerrigan Loughman (Trumbull, Conn.) and junior midfielder Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) all had one shot on target in the contest.

The Falcons return to action next Saturday, September 12, with their home and GNAC opener versus Anna Maria on Celentano Field at 1:00 p.m.
