Women's Tennis Falls to In-State Rival St. Joseph in GNAC Play

West Hartford, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team fell to in-state rival St. Joseph (Conn.), 7-2, on the road Tuesday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Falcons who move to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in league play, while Blue Jays won their second straight home contest to improve to 4-6 on the year and 1-3 in conference tilts.

In doubles action, the hosts won two of three matches to take an early, 2-1 edge. At No. 2, the Falcon duo of freshman Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) and sophomore Kelsea Wildman (Hamden, Conn.) earned an 8-6 victory. The win was the fifth straight for the tandem as they earned the first point of the day for Albertus Magnus. The AMC duo of junior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and freshman Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) dropped a hard-fought match, 8-3, at No. 1.

The Blue Jays pulled away in singles play, winning five of six matches to secure the conference win. Weaver was stellar for the Falcons, winning her match in straight sets at No. 2. She disposed of Lucy Roberge, 6-0, 6-1, to earn her first GNAC singles victory.

Albertus Magnus returns to action tomorrow, October 7 with a home GNAC clash versus Mount Ida at Celentano Courts.
