New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College women's tennis team concluded the 2016 regular season with an 8-1 resounding victory against visiting New Rochelle in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Celentano Courts.

The Falcons (5-6) defeated the Blue Angels (1-10) for the second straight season. Albertus Magnus closes out the campaign with a trio of wins in non-conference play.

The hosts got off to a quick start, taking two of the three doubles matches to build an early advantage. At No. 2, the Falcon tandem of sophomores Alicia Weaver (Bethel, Conn.) and Izzy Sabino (Cheshire, Conn.) cruised to an 8-0 win. The Albertus Magnus duo of freshmen Cayce Andrews (Hamden, Conn.) and Dayanlee Quezada-Coello (New Haven, Conn.) netted an 8-2 victory at No. 3.

In singles play, the hosts pulled away and sealed the victory by taking all six contests. In her final collegiate home match, senior Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) scored a 6-4, 6-1 straight-set win at No.1.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, October 19, with a road contest against in-state rival St. Joseph (Conn.) in the opening round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. On Saturday, the Bluejays topped the Falcons, 9-0, in the Elm City. AMC is looking to avenge a setback versus USJ in the conference tournament last autumn.
