Falcons Off to Best Start in Program History; Defeat Mitchell 3-1

With their second-straight victory, the Falcons are off to their best start in the history of the Albertus Magnus women's volleyball program. With a 3-0 win over Pine Manor and a 3-1 victory against Mitchell College on Saturday afternoon, the Falcons improved to 3-2 overall on the year.

Against Mitchell, the Falcons won the first set by two at 25-23 then dropped the second set 25-16.

Mitchell led 23-20 in the opening set before Albertus scored five straight points to take the victory. The Falcons recorded two points off Mitchell errors before tying the set at 23 on a kill by Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn.). Kelsey Pendagast (Shelton, Conn.) then closed out the set with a pair of kills to give the Falcons the win.

Mitchell won the second set 25-16 thanks to four kills from Gloria Charles.

In the third set, led by 11 kills, the Falcons took the victory with a 25-17 final. The Falcons' followed with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Acerra recorded 19 digs and eight kills to lead the Falcons to victory. Maritza Rosemond (New Haven, Conn.) dished out 19 assists, while tallying 12 digs. Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) led the Falcons with 20 digs as Krista LaBissoniere (Meriden, Conn.) added 16.

Mitchell finished the match with 10 more kills than the Falcons along with 10 more hitting errors. The Falcons also recorded nine service aces in the victory.

The Falcons will open the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season on Wednesday, Sept. 12 as they host Rivier College in a 6:00 p.m. match-up in New Haven.
