Women's Volleyball Weekly Preview: York, St. Joseph (Conn.) & Rivier

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team went 0-3 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action last week, falling on the road to Mount Ida, Suffolk and Emmanuel. The Falcons fought hard in the matches, but failed to take any sets.

This Week: The Falcons have a trio of matches this week, hosting York College in midweek, non-conference action before heading to New Hampshire for a GNAC tri-match featuring in-state foe St. Joseph (Conn.) and Rivier. Albertus Magnus enters the seventh week of the regular season with a 5-13 overall record and an 0-5 mark in league play.

Earlier this Fall Versus the Cardinals: Albertus Magnus scored a 3-0 victory in a neutral-site clash with York at the Blazer Invitational hosted by Elms. It was a balanced offensive effort with four different Falcons registering five or more kills. Amber Cohens led the way for the Falcons versus the Cardinals with seven kills and a .231 attack percentage.

Last Year Against the Bluejays: St. Joseph (Conn.) scored a 3-0 triumph on the road against Albertus Magnus last October. Ana Gomez led the charge for the Falcons with seven kills and eight digs in the setback. Cohens also chipped in with four kills and two solo blocks.

Last Autumn Against the Raiders: Rivier topped the Falcons, 3-0, in a neutral-site battle at Norwich last October. The Raiders took advantage of 12 Albertus Magnus receiving errors in the victory. Gomez once again had a good game in defeat for the Falcons with five kills, 10 digs and two solo blocks.  

NOTES:
- Freshman outside hitter Ashley David in having a stellar first fall on campus, leading the team with 123 kills, 2.02 kills per set and 157 digs. She also has amassed 13 assists, 27 service aces, while averaging 2.57 digs per set and accounting for 151.5 points.
- David is one of three players with more than 100 kills with Gomez totaling 108 and Cohens recording 104. In the middle, Marielis Muriel leads the way with 263 assists and freshman Jesselle Guzman has added 88 of her own. At the service line, Cohens has a team-best 38 aces. Defensively, David has 157 digs and classmate Nashalie Bayona is second on the team with 154.
- All five of the team's wins have come in non-conference play this fall. At home, the team is 2-4. In true road contests the squad is 2-6 and in neutral site matches the Falcons are 1-3.  
- The team has four returners and five newcomers this season.
- Seven of the team's first eight games will take place outside of New Haven. Last year, the squad picked up four wins away from home.
