Women's Volleyball Drops Road Tri-Match to Norwich and Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team lost both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tri-match hosted by Rivier University on Saturday afternoon inside Muldoon Gymnasium. 

In the match opener, the Falcons were bested in three sets by the Cadets of Norwich University before falling to the Raiders in the nightcap by a final score of 3-0.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Norwich controlled the opening set against the Falcons as the Cadets held a 13-7 edge in kills, but the blue-and-white posted a 3-2 edge in blocks.  
  • The Cadets dominated offensively and defensively in set two, hitting an impressive .263 at the net and blocking three of the Falcon's 39 attacks.  
  • Albertus could not force a fourth deciding set against Norwich and lost by a final score of 3-0.
  • Joismar Avilés (Hatillo, Puerto Rico) has led the Falcons in back-to-back matches in kills with five. 
  • Rachael Pellegrini (Clinton, Conn.) assisted seven of the Falcons' 17 kills.
  • Defensively, Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) paced AMC for the third straight match with 17 digs, while Diana Kalman (East Haven, Conn.) and Elizabeth Lynch (Stratford, Conn.) posted two blocks each.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Albertus and Rivier battled back and forth over the first couple of points to start off the match, but the Raiders came up on top, 25-13, to take the 1-0 lead.
  • Rivier came out hot to start off the second set and never looked back, winning by a final score of 25-9 and increasing its lead over the Falcons to 2-0. 
  • Albertus threatened the Raiders in the third set as the Falcons battled to within four, 17-13, following an attack error by Lydia Pray.
  • However, the blue-and-white could not mount the comeback as Rivier closed out the final set on an 8-3 run. 
  • Avilés led the Falcons offensively for the third straight match, along with Colleen Edwards and Nathalie Wallace
  • Avilés, Wallace, Lynch, and Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) each recorded a block assist for the blue-and-white.

The Falcons return to the court on Monday, October 10th, for a road match-up with the Mariners of Mitchell College. The opening serve is set for 7 PM inside the Yarnall Athletic Center.
