Volleyball Keeps Hot Start Going With Sweep Of Yeshiva

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team kept its undefeated start to 2024 going with a dominant 3-0 win over Yeshiva University on Tuesday evening in a non-conference match.

The 3-0 start to the season is the first in program history. Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) led the way with 11 kills. The Falcons had 12 aces on the evening, including six from Alexys Signor (North Haven, Conn.) and five from Paula Matheus (Tunja-Boyaca, Colombia). Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 20 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams split the first eight points of the first set, with the Falcons only trailing once at 4-3. Albertus then closed the set on a 22-5 run. The Falcons had 11 kills in the set on 20 attempts, including five from Majo Pelaez. Albertus scored eight straight points on serves from Signor which included three aces.
  • In the second set, the Falcons trailed 10-8 early on, but an 8-2 run from the Falcons put them up 16-2 as Matheus notched three consecutive aces during the run. Yeshiva got to within three points at 16-13, but never threatened Albertus as kills by Pelaez, Nathalie Wallace (Rocky Hill, Conn.), Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) and Matheus over the final 11 points of the match gave the Falcons a 2-0 edge.
  • Albertus never trailed in the third set, jumping out to an early 5-0 lead behind an ace from Gordon and two kills from Pelaez and one from Fallon. Yeshiva crept back to make it 6-5, but another kill from Fallon and one from Yarieshka Sierra (Hartford, Conn.) combined with three errors by the Maccabees put Albertus up 11-5. Albertus took a 19-9 lead that included two more aces from Matheus and never let Yeshiva geet any closer than six points the rest of the way. Signor closed out the match with an ace.

  • Signor now has 13 aces on the season, which is a new career high. Her six aces were also a career-high in a match.
  • Dating back to last season, Gordon has had double-digit assists in 21 consecutive matches.
  • It was the first all-time meeting between the two teams.
