Volleyball Has 23 Aces In Sweep Of Lyndon

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team made quick work of Vermont State University - Lyndon, 3-0 on Wednesday evening at the Cosgrove Marcus Messer Athletic Conter in non-conference action.

Paula Matheus (Tunja-Boyaca, Colombia) had seven kills and four aces, while Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) had four kills and five aces. Alexys Signor (North Haven, Conn.) and Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) had four aces as the Falcons had 23 as a team, which was a season-high. Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 12 assists to lead Albertus.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was all Albertus in the first set as the Falcons never trailed, jumping out to a 19-2 lead as the Falcons had eight aces in just the first 18 points of the set with Signor notching four, and Zdru, three. The Falcons had nine aces in total in the set including one to end the set from Matheus. Pelaez had three kills in the set.
  • The second set started out the two teams splitting the first 12 points of the set, until the Falcons took control with seven straight points of their own that included five aces from Pelaez and a kill from Matheus to take a commanding 13-6 lead. The Falcons then went on another 6- run to all but seal the second set, going up 19-8. Yarelis Torres (East Haven, Conn.) had two kills in the set for Albertus as the Falcons took a 2-0 match lead after the Hornets ended with two straight attack errors.
  • The Hornets led 7-6 in the third but a 10-1 run by the Falcons put them in the drivers seat at 16-8 as Natalie Garcia (New Haven, Conn.) had two aces during the run and Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) had two kills. The Hornets did not get any closer than seven points the rest of the way. Albertus had ten kills in the set.

NOTEWORTHY

  •  The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Falcons.
  • It was the fourth match this season that Albertus had double-digits in aces.
  • The Falcons allowed just 12 points from VSU-Lyndon which was a season-best.
  • Albertus held VSU-Lyndon to a season-low -.293 attack percentage.
