HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons jumped out to an arly 6-3 lead as Paula Matheus (Tunja-Boyaca, Colombia) had an ace and a kill. From there, the Blue Jays went on an 8-2 run to take their own three-point lead.  Two kills from Nyanna Richards (Bridgeport, Conn.) and an ace from Joismar Aviles (Hatillo, Puerto Rico) tied the set back up at 12-12, but three straight errors from the Falcons made it a 15-12 lead for USJ. The Blue Jays took a 23-18 lead, but two kills from Aviles and two aces from Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) cut the deficit to 23-22, but USJ scored the last two points to take the first set.
  • The Falcons scored the first three points of the second set as Emma Fallon (Harwinton, Conn.) and Matheus each had a kill. However, USJ would take control of the set, scoring the next eight points to take an 8-3 lead as Gabriella Wanner had two aces and Rachel Heaney had two kills. USJ uncreased its lead to 13-5 on an ace from Fernanda Ayala Rodriguez, but three straight points, including a kill from Gordon make it a 13-8 set in favor of USJ. Albertus never got closer than 15-11 the rest of the way as 10-5 run from the Blue Jays gave them the 2-0 match lead.
  • The Falcons never led in the third set as USj took a commanding 11-2 lead. Albertus battled back to get it to 18-13 after a kill from Yarieshka Sierra (Hartford, Conn.) and an ace from Matheus. The Blue Jays once again extended its lead back to nine at 23-14, but the Falcons didn't go away quietly, scoring four straight, including a kill by Nathalie Wallace (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Yarelis Torres (East Haven, Conn.) and an ace by Majo Pelaez (Armenia, Colombia) made it a 23-19 set. USJ would score the final two points, ending it on an ace from Bernae Webb.
