Baseball Weekly Preview: Rivier & Saint Joseph's (Maine)

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College baseball team went 3-4 last week, splitting a trio of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheaders and dropping a midweek non-conference clash at home to Mount St. Mary's. Albertus Magnus enters the week with a 9-16 overall record and a 3-5 mark in league action. On the mound, junior hurler Christopher Rivera picked up two conference wins for the Falcons with complete games on the road against Lasell and Norwich. Freshman infielder Mike Browne continued his steady play at the dish with six hits and six RBIs on the week.

This Week: The Falcons host Rivier on Saturday in league play before traveling for a conference doubleheader at St. Joseph's (Maine) on Sunday.

Last Spring Against Rivier: The Raiders took both ends of GNAC doubleheader versus the Falcons at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, New Hampshire last year. Rivier scored a 17-4 victory in the opener and blanked the guests, 3-0, in game two. In game one, Mike Saia went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Falcons. In the nightcap, the Falcons mustered just four hits in a shutout loss.

Last Year Versus SJC: The Monks swept a GNAC doubleheader versus the Falcons last spring. Saint Joseph's rallied with single runs in the sixth and seventh frames to score a 3-2 win in the opener. Justin Poirier delivered the big hit for the Falcons in the loss, plating two runs with a single through the left side. In game two, Saia had an RBI single up the middle for the hosts as Albertus Magnus fell, 6-2.

Albertus Notes
- Browne hit .375 with a .389 on-base percentage as the Falcons went 3-4 last week. During the week, he recorded two multi-hit games and had two games with two or more RBIs. He opened the week by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs in a 9-8 conference win at Lasell. Browne put a book-end to his week by going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk in a 10-4 triumph against Anna Maria.
- As a team AMC has an ERA of 7.19 this season. Defensively, the squad has a fielding percentage of .925 and has committed 60 errors in 25 games.
- Albertus Magnus has split each of its last three conference series. On the mound, Rivera has tossed two straight complete games.
- Offensively, Poirier leads the team in hits (27), doubles (7) and RBIs (18). He his batting .333 this spring and has stolen four bases. Classmate Tyler Robertson has a team-best 15 runs scored and five stolen bases this spring. Browne and fellow freshman Dean Gullo are hitting .364 and .375, respectively, this year.
