Field Hockey Beats Elms For First Win Behind Two Goals And An Assist From Helmbold

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Mariya Helmbold (Bellmawr, N.J.) scored twice and had an assist and Rosianys Rivera (New Haven, Conn.) and Jess Trocchio (Holtsville, N.Y.) each had a goal as the Albertus Magnus College field hockey team won its first match of the season in a 4-0 win over Elms College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest.

The Falcons did not allow a shot on the day as Ella Welton (Cliffwood, N.J.) won her first game in goal.

The Falcons had 24 shots, which were a program record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first period, Trocchio got the Falcons on the board with her second goal of the season as she stole a ball from Elms inside of its own box and put a shot past Blazers goaltender, Emily Hunt to make it a 1-0 game. It was Trocchio's second goal of the season.
  • The Falcons took the one-goal lead into the half and would score twice in the third period. The first came from Rivera - who scored her first of her career - after Helmbold made a crossing pass around Hunt along the goal line and Rivera put it home to make it a 2-0 game.
  • At the 42:01 mark of the game in the third, Melina Tarzia (Stamford, Conn.) raced down the field with the ball and found a wide open Helmbold in the box. Helmbold took a shot from five feet out that beat Hunt, putting Albertus up, 3-0. It was the first goal of Helmbold's career.
  • Helmbold added her second goal just over two minutes into the fourth, stuffing a ball in during a scramble in front of the net for the final tally of the game.
