Bonilla's Hot Start Lifts Men's Basketball To Seventh Straight Win

CHICOPEE, Mass. - Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) scored the first 18 points for the Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team as the Falcons won its seventh straight game in a 70-58 victory over Elms in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Wednesday evening.

Bonilla finished with a game-high 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting from the field. Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) put together another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.) had 15 points to go with four rebounds and six assists.

The Falcons have yet to lose in the 2024 calendar year and are one of just two teams undefeated in GNAC play as they are perched on the top of the standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was all Bonilla for the first eight minutes of the game as he started 7-for-9 from the field, including four three-pointers to stake the Falcons to an 18-11 lead.
  • Crawford and Jayquan Kirkland each made layups on back-to-back possessions to put Albertus up 22-11. 
  • The Falcons did not allow the Blazers to get closer than nine points the rest of the half and took its biggest lead of the half on a layup from Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.) with 1:16 before halftime. Albertus went into the half with a 39-25 lead.
  • Bonilla hit the first basket of the second half for Albertus and Washington scored the next four points as the Falcons took its biggest lead of the game at 45-27 with 17:42 on the clock.
  • The Falcons went up 49-33, but the Blazers battled back, scoring ten straight as Teron Griffin scored six and Aaron Sanchez, four during the run. The Blazers got to within five points with just under ten minutes left but Crawford hit a jumper while getting fouled. He sank his free throw to up the Falcons up, 54-46.
  • Elms got to within six points one more time at 56-50 with 7:23 left, but Bonilla scored four straight and the Blazers wouldn't get closer than eight points the rest of the way.

NOTEWORTHY

  • With his layup at the 18:44 mark of the second half, Washington surpassed 900 career points. He now has 907.
  • It was Bonilla's second-highest point total of the season. He scored a season-high 34 in a win over Lehman in November. He has scored 20 or more points five times this season.
  • Five of the seven wins during the streak have come by double-digits.
  • Albertus is now 5-1 all-time against Elms, including the last five matchups.
