Falcons Cruise to 9-2 Win at Anna Maria

The Albertus Magnus softball team scored five runs in the opening inning to lift the Falcons to a 9-2 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over Anna Maria on Sunday afternoon in Paxton, Mass.

With the win, the Falcons improved to 14-22 on the year, while Anna Maria fell to 5-30 overall.  Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, Conn.) earned the win for Albertus as she went all seven innings on the mound and struck out three batters. She gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits.

Albertus' five-run first inning was led by an RBI double by sophomore Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.).  After a triple by Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.), Maio connected on her fifth double of the season to score the Falcons' first run of the ballgame.

Back-to-back errors by Anna Maria allowed two more runs to score for the Falcons before Brianna Lord (Westerly, R.I.) singled to centerfield to plate two more Falcons.

Anna Maria scored one run in the first inning then one in the fifth to cap its scoring on the day.

Albertus added a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Maio as Urciuoli scored once again.  Albertus scored three runs in the fourth on two hits and two Anna Maria errors.  That inning was highlighted by an RBI single to center by Isabel Lopez (West Haven, Conn.).  Lopez finished the day 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.

Maio went 2-for-4 for the Falcons with two RBI and one run, while Urciuoli had one hit and three runs scored.
