Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Brooklyn College

The Albertus Magnus softball team took home two victories on Sunday as the Falcons downed Brooklyn College 9-3 before blanking the Bulldogs 6-0 in game two of the doubleheader.

Albertus improved to 6-4 on the year with the non-conference victory, while Brooklyn moved to 2-4 overall.

Brianna Longley (Milford, Conn.) improved to 2-2 on the year as she won game one from the hill for the Falcons. She went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits.  One of those runs was earned, while she walked two and struck out six.

Carli Matrisian (Milford, Conn.) led the Falcons in game one as she went 3-for-4 with two RBI.  Brittney Urciuoli (Newington, Conn.) also tallied in two RBI as she had one hit and two runs scored.  Freshman Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) and Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) both tallied two-hit games as well for the Falcons.

Brooklyn was led by Samantha Rodriguez who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Falcons' struck first in the opening frame as Jessica Seaver (North Haven, Conn.) recorded a sacrifice fly to score Jessey from third. Matrisian added two more Falcons to the run tally with a single up the middle to put the Falcons ahead 3-0.

The Falcons added three runs in the top of the fifth inning before Brooklyn got on the scoreboard with two unearned runs. The Falcons took a 9-2 lead in the sixth inning before Brooklyn added its final run in the bottom of the same frame.

Kimberly Brennan earned the loss in game one, allowing three runs on five hits.  She walked one and struck out two in four innings.  Amanda Bisz threw three innings and gave up six runs, three of which were earned, on five hits.

 

In game two, Shyleen Ortiz improved to 4-2 on the year as she threw a complete-game shutout as she allowed just three hits in the contest.  She walked two as well and struck out one.

Jessey had another solid outing for the Falcons as she went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) tallied two RBI for the Falcons and scored a run, while Matrisian added an RBI.

Kayla Hill threw four innings for Brooklyn in the second game as she allowed all six runs on eight Falcon hits.  Marie Oneto threw the final three innings and allowed just one hit.

In the third inning, the Falcons' struck first as Cataudella recorded a multiple-RBI double to give Albertus a 2-0 lead. In the same inning, Albertus tallied two more runs as a Matrisian added an RBI before a Brooklyn fielding error gave Albertus a 4-0 lead.

Albertus added two more runs in the fourth on a Jessey RBI double and an RBI groundout by Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.).
