Falcons Blank Mount Ida 8-0 in Game 2

After a tough loss in game one of its Monday afternoon Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader, the Albertus Magnus softball team answered with an 8-0 shutout of the Mustangs in game number two led by Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) as she went 2-for-2 with one run scored and two RBI.

The win improved the Falcons' overall record to 15-12 on the year and 8-8 in conference play, while Mount Ida fell to 7-17 overall and 6-10 in league action.

Shyleen Ortiz (New Britain, Conn.) threw five shutout innings and allowed just three hits on the afternoon. She struck out one and did not give up a walk.

Cataudella drove in a pair of runs and was on base twice in the third inning after leading off the frame with a walk and eventually scoring.  She later drove in a run with a single as the run proved to be the final run of the inning.  Her first RBI single came in the first inning when the Falcons' jumped out to an early 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, the Falcons plated six runs to extend their lead.  Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) recorded a two-run triple to right center to cap the impressive offensive outing.

The Falcons hold onto the sixth spot in the GNAC standings after Monday's GNAC split.  The Falcons have three league doubleheaders remaining on their GNAC schedule, including contests against in-state foe the University of Saint Joseph, Lasell College, and Suffolk.
