Falcons Sweep Lasell in GNAC Doubleheader

The Albertus Magnus softball team cruised to two victories over Lasell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Thursday night in West Haven.  The Falcons won game one 6-3 before cruising to an 11-3 win over the Lasers in game two.

With the wins, Albertus improved to 17-12 on the year and 10-8 in GNAC play, while Lasell fell to 13-21 overall and 6-14 in league action.

Game One:

Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) led the Falcons in game one with a 3-for-4 performance, while Carli Matrisian (Milford, Conn.) tallied one hit and three RBI.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning, the Falcons fell behind 3-2 on a Courtney Moen bases clearing double.  The Falcons took back the lead in the fifth inning with four runs led by a two-RBI double from Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.)

Brianna Longley (Milford, Conn.) earned the victory from the hill as she allowed three runs on six hits in six innings. She also struck out four batters in her eighth win of the season.

Game Two:

Matrisian went 3-for-4 with three runs, while senior Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) added a hit and three RBI. 

Albertus scored three runs in the second inning and five in the third en route to an early 8-1 lead. Vesciglio singled in the second inning to plate two of the Falcons' three runs in the inning.  She added another RBI in the third inning after a leadoff home run by freshman Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.).

After Lasell scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning, Albertus finished the game with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Puccilli doubled in two more runs before scoring the eventual game-winning run on an Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) walk-off sacrifice fly to left field.

Shyleen Ortiz (New Britain, Conn.) allowed just two earned runs on three hits in six innings of work. She struck out one batter as she improved to 8-3 on the year. 

Lasell's Eileen Bergin took the loss to fall to 7-15 on the year. She allowed eight runs on five hits in 2.2 innings of work.
