The Albertus Magnus softball team dropped two contests to the University of Saint Joseph on Monday afternoon to finish the 2014 regular season. The Falcons were edged in game one 4-2 before falling in game two 11-3 in five innings.
With the loss, the Falcons move to 17-16 on the year and finish 10-12 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings which puts the Falcons in seventh place among conference teams. USJ improved to 21-10 overall and 17-5 in league play, putting the Blue jays in fourth place in the league standings.
With the seventh-place finish, the Falcons will play in the GNAC Tournament, beginning on Tuesday, for the first time under head coach Ed Emielita and for the first time since the 2006 season when the Falcons finished 10-14 in league play.
The Falcons' 17 wins this season are the most for the program since finishing the 2002 season with a 23-12 overall record.
The Falcons will head to sixth-seeded Norwich University on Tuesday to play in the first round of tournament play. Game time has yet to be determined.
Game One:
The Falcons fell in game one 4-2. Devon DeLallo singled in a run in the first inning before USJ took a 2-1 lead with a run in the second and one run in the third.
In the fifth inning, USJ scored two runs to take a 4-1 lead thanks to RBI singles by Ashley Gall and May Sciglimpaglia. The Falcons added their second run of the contest on a sacrifice from Elaina Maio.
Danielle Circosta allowed one earned run and struck out six in the game one victory for the Blue Jays. Brianna Longley took the loss as she allowed four runs on nine hits in game one for Albertus.
Game Two:
Ashley Tucker led the Blue Jays with a homer in each of today's contest as she led off the second inning of the 11-3 win with a home run to right center. She added a homer in the third inning to become the second player in school history to hit two home runs in a game.
Albertus took a 2-0 lead in the contest after an RBI single by Devon DeLallo in the first inning and an Alyssa Puccilli run scored in the second on a USJ error.
Tucker's home run made the score 2-1 before a three-run double in the same inning to put USJ ahead 4-1. The Blue Jays scored five runs in the fifth inning to earn the eight-run victory. Emily Vigue allowed one earned run in the win.
