Falcons Split GNAC Doubleheader with USJ

The Albertus Magnus softball team split a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contests in New Haven on Wednesday afternoon.  The Falcons dropped game one 7-2 before winning game two by a score of 4-2.

Albertus improved to 9-9 on the year with the split, while the Falcons moved to 5-3 in GNAC play. Saint Joseph moved to 7-7 on the year and 3-1 in GNAC play as the Falcons' handed the Blue Jays their lone loss of league play thus far.

The Falcons used three home runs in the second game of the afternoon en route to the 4-2 victory. Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.), Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.), and Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) each tallied a home run in the contest.

Castillo registered two RBI in the first inning with her home run to left center before Wehder's solo shot to left gave Albertus a 3-0 lead.  Puccilli extended the Falcons' lead to 4-0 with a solo shot down the left field line.

Samantha Maselli (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) went the distance, throwing seven innings, while allowing one earned run on eight hits. She improved to 6-3 on the year. The Blue Jays' Danielle Circosta fell to 2-1 as she allowed four runs on five hits in two innings.

Saint Joseph was led by Patti Sciglimpaglia with a 3-for-4 performance, while Emily Vigue tallied a double that plated both of the Blue Jays' runs in the top of the sixth inning.

In the opening contest, the Blue Jays cruised to a 7-2 win.  Saint Joseph was led by two hits from three different players, including receiving a 2-for-3 effort with two runs scored and three RBI from Shelby Tallman.

Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) led the Falcons in the contest with a 2-for-4 performance and one RBI. Sciglimpaglia improved to 5-2 on the year as she threw seven innings and struck out five batters. Shyleen Ortiz (New Britain, Conn.) fell to 1-4 on the year as she allowed seven runs on 10 hits.

The Falcons will host Rivier on Saturday in a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader in New Haven, while the Blue Jays will host Anna Maria College in GNAC play on Thursday at Albertus Magnus in New Haven.
