Softball Edged by Rutgers-Camden in North Myrtle Beach

North Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team fell to Rutgers-Camden, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the NMB Park and Sports Complex Field No. 5 in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

With the loss, the Falcons move to 3-2 overall heading into the final day of their spring break trip in the Palmetto State, while the Raptors avenged a season-opening loss to AMC to improve to 5-4 on the year.

Rutgers-Camden jumped to an early lead, plating four runs on five hits in the top of the first. The visitors on the scoreboard would add three more insurance runs in the fourth courtesy of three-run homer off the bat of pitcher Brittany Scott.

Albertus Magnus cut the deficit to just three in the home half of the third as sophomore Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) lined a two-out single up the middle that scored classmate Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) from second.

The Falcons would plate another run in sixth thanks to a two-out RBI single from sophomore designated player Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.).

Albertus was unable to get anything going offensively outside of the third and sixth as Scott kept the Falcon hitters off balance all afternoon. She finished with nine strikeouts and went the distance to earn the victory.

In the circle for AMC, sophomore Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) went four innings and allowed seven runs to be saddled with the loss. In relief of Ferraro, sophomore Samantha Maselli (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and freshman Shayla Gladden (Springfield, Mass.) combined to work three scoreless innings, while allowing just one hit.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Thursday, March 17, with their final three games of the spring break trip. The Falcons square off with Keystone at 11:30 am, Southern Vermont at 1:30 pm and Bay Path at 3:30 pm.
