New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team lost both ends of a non-conference doubleheader versus Rutgers-Newark on Friday afternoon at Celentano Field. The visiting Scarlet Raiders scored an 11-1 five-inning victory in the opener and held off a late Falcon rally for a 4-2 triumph in the finale.

With the two out of league setbacks, Albertus Magnus moves to 20-14 on the spring, while Rutgers-Newark ran its winning streak to four games to enter the weekend with a 20-18 overall mark.

Game One
The Scarlet Raiders jumped on AMC starter Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) for five runs in the top of the first innings courtesy of six hits in the frame. The guests put the game out of reach with another five-run outburst in the top fifth off Falcon reliever Shayla Gladden (Springfield, Mass.).

In the top of the first, Rutgers-Newark got RBI singles from freshman Liesel Johnson and classmate Samantha Hoffman. The bit hit in the stanza was a three-run triple to right center by sophomore infielder Kayla Gallo.

The Scarlet Raiders added an insurance run in the second thanks to an RBI double to left center by leadoff hitter Elizabeth Marflak.

The hosts got on the board in the bottom of the seventh courtesy of an RBI ground out to second by junior Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) that brought sophomore Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) racing home.

The Falcons mustered just two hits in the game off Rutgers Newark pitchers Kelly Yusko and Morgan Walizer. Tusko worked the first three frames to earn her 14th win of the spring. For the Falcons, Ferraro was saddled with the loss to move to 12-4 on the year.

Cataudella and senior Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) had the hits for the hosts.

Game Two
AMC opened the scoring in game two thanks to a two-out RBI double to left center by sophomore Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.). Puccilli came around to score on the play and started the two-out rally with a walk and a stolen base to move into scoring position.

In the top of the third, Walizer helped herself out with an RBI single to right center that brought Gallo around to score an unearned run.

Three errors came back to bite the Falcons as the guests took the lead with three runs in the fifth.

Albertus Magnus pulled to within two with two outs in the bottom of the seventh as Wehder delivered a run-scoring single up the middle. Walizer would settle down and get the next AMC hitter to line out to squash the rally.

In the circle for the Falcons, sophomore Samantha Maselli (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) went the distance and allowed just one earned run in a losing effort. Maselli scattered 11 hits and fanned one batter to move to 2-1 on the spring. On the opposite side, Walizer tossed six innings of relief to earn her sixth victory of the season.

Albertus Magnus closes out the 2016 regular season on Saturday, April 30, with a home conference doubleheader versus Emmanuel that is slated to get underway at noon. Last spring, the Falcons topped the Saints three times, sweeping a doubleheader on the road in the regular season before eliminating Emmanuel in the opening round of the GNAC Tournament.
