Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Rutgers-Newark

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team split with Rutgers-Newark in non-conference play on Thursday afternoon at Celentano Field. The Falcons secured game one, 4-3, in extra innings before falling 13-4 in the night cap. Freshman Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) tied the game up, 3-3, after she allowed Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) to score off a sacrifice fly to center field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 5th Inning – After a scoreless four innings, Rutgers-Newark scored first scoring two runs on two hits to take the late lead, 2-0.

(T) 6th Inning – The Scarlett Raiders extended their lead to three, 3-0, as Elizabeth Marflak collected the RBI single to allow the Brittany Kalesse to score, after the bases were loaded with no outs.

(B) 6th Inning – Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) drove in the Falcons' first run of the game as Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) scored after doubling to second and stealing third. With two outs and a runner on second, Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) cleared the bases cutting the Scarlett Raiders' lead to within one, 3-2.

(B) 7th Inning – With one out and a runner in scoring position, Anderson tied the game up, 3-3, after she allowed Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) to score off a sacrifice fly to center field.

(B) 8th Inning - With a runner on second, Esposito allowed the game winning run to score to extend the Falcons' winning streak to seven.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) led the offensive unit with two RBI and two runs scored as well as went 1-for-4 at the plate.
  • Brittany Kalesse recorded a team-high three hits for the Scarlett Raiders while Kelly Yusko added two RBI, two hits and a run.
  • Albertus Magnus went 4-of-26 at the plate while Rutgers-Newark went 8-of-30.
  • Four different players registered at least a hit for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning – Rutgers-Newark took the early 1-0 advantage to start off game two after Morgan Walizer scored on a RBI single to right field.

(B) 1st Inning – Albertus Magnus answered right back on offense scoring two runs on a hit to take the 2-1 lead. Wehder allowed the Falcons' two runs to score after she doubled to the outfield.

(T) 2nd Inning – The Scarlett Raiders tied the game at 2-2 as the visitors scored a run with one out and runner on third.

(T) 4th Inning – Rutgers-Newark broke the silence in the top of the fourth scoring three runs on four hits to extend its lead to three, 5-2.

(B) 4th Inning – The Falcons recorded another two-run inning as Morgan Shura (Wallingford,Conn.) started the inning with a double to the outfield. Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) allowed Shura to cross home before Cataudella scored on a RBI from Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.). Following a pitching change by the Scarlet Raiders, the Falcons went down quickly 1-2-3, ending the threat.

(T) 5th / 7 Inning – Up by one, Rutgers-Newark totaled eight runs over the final two innings to secure the 13-4 non-conference win. The fifth inning was highlighted by a grand slam by Kayla Gallo and Samantha Hoffman led the visitors in the seventh with a three-run RBI double.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Wehder and Kelly led the Falcons in game two with two hits apiece while Wedher added two RBI to her stat line.
  • Albertus Magnus finished the game 6-of-28 at the plate while the Scarlett Raiders went 17-of-36.
  • Three different players tallied three hits for the Scarlett Raiders.

The Falcons return to action on April 2nd against Anna Maria. Game times are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the New England Baseball Complex in Massachusetts.
