Fortier's Big Day Leads Softball in Doubleheader Sweep at Dean

Franklin, Mass. - Behind a solid performance at the plate, including two home runs, by Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College softball team improved to 16-6 on the season as the Falcons swept Dean College in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The Falcons dominated in game one, 14-0, and secured the night cap, 10-2, in five innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning – Bats came alive in the top of the first as the Falcons took the early 5-0 advantage following a five run two hit inning. With no outs and bases loaded, Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) got things going with an RBI walk before Morgan Shura (Wallingford, Conn.) scored on a passed ball. Dasia Wehder (Bronx, N.Y.) continued the rally reaching first on a error and allowing Anderson to score, tallying the third run of the inning. Following two quick outs, Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) allowed the final two runs to score off an RBI double to right field.

(T) 3rd Inning – Albertus Magnus continued to swing the bat in the top of the third, scoring seven runs to push its lead to 12-0. Castillo struck again in the top of the third as the first basemen recorded her second home run of the season as well as allowed three runs to score.

(T) 4th Inning – Fortier tacked on two extra runs for the Falcons in the top of the fourth as she collected her second home run of the season and allowed Samantha Maselli (Rockville Center, N.Y.) to score after she doubled to the outfield.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Six different Falcons registered at least two hits while the Falcons recorded a 14-of-31 showing at the plate.
  • Fortier led the visitors with three runs scored while Castillo collected a team-high four RBI.
  • For Dean, Samantha Mulcahy and Angelina Taylor recorded the Bulldog's only two hits.
  • With the win, Anderson improves her record to 6-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 1st Inning – Similar to game one, Albertus Magnus scored in the top of the first, this time only scoring one run as Fortier led off the game with her third home run of the season.

(B) 1st Inning – However, Dean's Melanie Rios Nevarex gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the day, 2-1, scoring two runs as she tallied her fifth home run of the year.

(T) 2nd Inning – Shortly after, Fortier struck again for the Falcons, scoring two runs to push the Falcons lead to one, 3-2, as she reached first on an error by the left fielder.

(T) 4th Inning – It was another big inning for the visitors as the team scored five runs on six hits to extend the lead to 8-2. With one out and bases loaded, Kelly cleared the bases with a single before advancing home thanks to a RBI double from Fortier. With two outs, Marissa Guglielmi (Branford, Conn.) continued the inning for the Falcons as she collected a two-run RBI single.

(T) 5th Inning – Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) and Fortier secured the win for the Falcons as the duo recorded a RBI apiece to give the Falcons the 10-2 win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) led the Falcons in game two with a 3-of-3 performance at the plate as well as collected a team-high three runs scored.
  • Fortier also had an impressive game as the third basemen registered designated player, two runs scored and a team-high five RBI.
  • Dean finsihed game two going 3-of-18 at the plate.
  • Following today's win, Gladden earned her first win of the season.
