Softball Extends Winning Streak to Seven, Sweeps Saint Joseph's (Conn.) in GNAC Doubleheader

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team extends its winning streak to seven as the Falcons swept in-state rival the University of Saint Joseph's (Conn.) on Wednesday afternoon at Celentano Field in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Falcons took game one, 6-2, and secured the night cap, 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B) 3rd Inning – After two scoreless innings, the Falcons struck first scoring three runs on four hits to take the 3-0 advantage. Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) led off the inning with a single before Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) drove in Esposito as well as scored to put the Falcons up 2-0. With one out, Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) continued the rally with an RBI single to drive in Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.).

(T) 5th Inning – Saint Joseph's responded in third, scoring only one run to cut the lead to two, 3-1.

(T) 6th Inning – With one out and runners on second and third, the Blue Jays managed to score a run on a sacrifice fly to bring the score to within one, 3-2.

(B) 6th Inning – Albertus Magnus recorded a big sixth inning as the Falcons pushed their lead to four, 6-2, after scoring three runs on three hits. With one out, Daysia Wehder (Bronx, N.Y.) began the rally with a single before the Falcons loaded the bases. Maxine Sanchez (Corona, N.Y.) allowed the first run of the inning to score before Kelly tripled to clear the bases, allowing two runners to cross home.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Daysia Wehder (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Falcons at the plate with two hits while Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded a team-high three RBI.
  • The Falcons were 9-of-27 at the plate while the Blue Jays were 8-of-29.
  • McKenna Driscoll finished game one 2-of-3 at the plate.
  • Six different Falcons recorded one run scored.
  • Following today's win, Ferraro improves to 10-2 in the circle.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B)  3rd Inning – Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) got things going for the Falcons as she recorded the Falcons' first RBI of the game as she allowed Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) to score, despite recording the second out of the inning.

(B) 4th Inning – An inning later, Albertus Magnus tacked on another run to push its lead to 2-0 after Sanchez drove in Wehder on a RBI double, but Sanchez would be out at third.

(B) 5th Inning – The Falcons continued to tack on the runs as Cataudella recorded the Falcons' third run of the inning as she scored on a throwing error by the catcher, after beginning the inning with a single.

(T) 7th Inning – Saint Joseph's threatened Albertus Magnus in the top of the seventh with runners on, but were only allowed to score one run before the final out was recorded.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Cataudella led the Falcons in game two with a 2-of-2 performance at the plate as well as collected a team-high two runs scored.
  • Albertus Magnus finished the game 7-of-24 at the plate.
  • Saint Joseph's finished the game 3-of-23 at the plate.
  • Following today's win, Anderson improves to 7-2 on the mound.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday against Mount Ida. Game times are set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Celentano Field.
