Softball Splits Twinbill at Simmons

Boston, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team split with Simmons College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field The Sharks took game one, 7-6, but the Falcons rallied back in the night cap, 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B) 1st Inning – Simmons jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after Brianna Rastello scored following an RBI single from Ashley Lynch.

(T) 3rd Inning – Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) would tie the game at 1-1 as Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) hit a deep ball to right center, allowing Kelly to score after reaching to first with an infield single. However, the Falcons would leave the bases loaded as Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) collected the final out of the inning.

(B) 3rd Inning – Simmons answered back scoring four runs on three, including a three-run homer from Molly Hennessey, to put the hosts up 5-1.

(T) 4th Inning – Aliza Esposito (East Haven, Conn.) would scored the Falcons second run of the game to cut the score to within three, 5-2. With one out and a runner on second, Esposito would hit a single up the middle sending Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) home. Esposito and Maxine Sanchez (Corona, N.Y.) would end the inning with back-to-back outs.

(B) 4th Inning – Lauren Del Vacchio pushed the Sharks' lead back up to four, 6-2, as she scored the hosts' lone run of the inning with a RBI groundout.

(T) 5thInning – Fortier and Castillo would keep things interested as the due drove in two runs to bring the score to 6-4. Fortier recorded her second RBI of the game after driving the ball to right field and advancing Kelly home, who started the inning off with a bunt to the catcher. With one out and runners on third and first, Castillo would advance all runners, including Fortier, before the final two outs were collected.

(B) 5th Inning – Michaela Reeves would score the Sharks' final run of the game and pushed the hosts lead to three, 7-4.

(T) 7th Inning -  In the top of the seventh, Albertus Magnus went down fighting scoring two runs on three hits, but fell short 7-6. Laura Anderson (East Haven, Conn.) and Cataudella each recorded a run scored as well as a RBI for the Falcons.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Fortier and Kelly led the Falcons with three hits apiece while Whitfield and Castillo added two hits to the Falcons' offense.
  • Albertus Magnus recorded 13 hits, five walks, two strikeouts and six RBI.
  • Simmons posted 11 hits, two walks, two strikeouts and seven RBI.
  • Following her three hit performance, Kelly recorded her 100th career hit as a Falcon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 3rd Inning - After two scoreless innings, Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) put the visitors on the board after recording her eight home run of the season. Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) started off the inning with an infield single before crossing home thanks to Fortier.

(B) 3rd Inning - The Sharks cut the Falcons' lead in half, 2-1, aa half inning later thanks to a RBI from Lauren Dal Vacchio. 

(T) 5th Inning - Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) allowed the final run of the game to score to give the Falcons the 3-1 road win. Kelly led off the inning with a walk as a single from Fortier advanced Kelly to second. Despite two outs on the board, Castillo managed to reach first on error by the short stop which allowed Kelly to score.

INSIDE THE STATS

  • Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded an impressive stat line as she went 2-of-2 at the plate as well as collected a team-high two runs scored.
  • Fortier recorded the Falcons third run scored and collected a team-high two RBI.
  • Albertus Magnus went 6-for-26 at the plate while Simmons went 3-for-24.
  • Three different players registered a hit for the Sharks.
