MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team suffered a pair of losses Wednesday morning during its spring trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. In game one, the Falcons dropped a heartbreaker to Suffolk University in extra innings, 8-7, before taking a 16-5 setback from Greenville University in the nightcap.

THE BASICS
FINAL (G1): Suffolk 8 | Albertus Magnus 7 (8 innings)
RECORDS: Albertus Magnus (4-1) | Suffolk (3-2)
Box Score

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Suffolk jumped out to the early 1-0 lead behind a one-run, one-hit inning in the top of the first.

An inning and a half later, Albertus threatened Suffolk with bases loaded and no outs, but back-to-back outs at home plate and a line out to third ended the second-inning rally.

Suffolk struck again in the top of the third, as an RBI double to left field and a two-run homer to left drove in three more runs, giving the Rams a four-run cushion heading into the bottom of the inning.

The Falcons finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the four-run deficit down to three, 4-1, following a one-out RBI double from Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.). However, back-to-back outs from Jess Stettinger (East Haven, Conn.) and Ava Gladwin (Guilford, Conn.) ended the frame.

Albertus continued to swing the bat as the Falcons evened the game at 4-4 an inning later behind back-to-back RBI singles from Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) and Madison LaBossiere (Griswold, Conn.) with two outs.

Suffolk countered Albertus' big inning by scoring two runs on two hits and capitalizing on an error in the top of seventh to take a two-run lead, 6-4.

A huge inning in the home half of the seventh from Albertus sent the game into extra innings as the Falcons evened the game at 6-6. AMC put two on with back-to-back walks before Stettinger stole third, and Gladwin  advanced to second on the throw. However, a throwing error by the third baseman in the next at-bat let both runners score.

The top of the eighth started with the Rams scoring two runs, one off an RBI single and one from an error, to take an 8-6 advantage over the Falcons. Albertus didn't back down from the threat as LaBossiere drove in Ema Signore (Guilford, Conn.) from third to earn an RBI, but Suffolk's Jenny Jacob ended the rally with a strikeout to seal the Rams' win.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
The Falcons got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead after a pair of early hits. Stettinger kicked off her stellar game with a double to right center before Kayla Resto (Shelton, Conn.) drove her home with an RBI single through the right side. Albertus put another runner on the bases with a walk but could not add to their lead after two straight outs to end the first.

Greenville's offense caught fire over the next three innings, as the Panthers put nine runs on the scoreboard over the next three frames. Greenville plated four runs in the second, four in the third, and one in the fourth to go ahead 9-1 through four innings.

Albertus got four runs back in the bottom of the fifth on a grand slam from Stettinger to make it a 9-5 game. The Falcons began the fifth with three straight singles from Celine Wood (Pawling, N.Y.), Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.), and Karissa Kerrs (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). Then, with the bases jacked, Stettinger turned on a ball and sailed it clean over the left-center wall.

Unfortunately for AMC, the grand slam marked the end of its run production. On the other hand, the Panthers added to their tally by scoring three runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to put the finishing touches on a 16-5 victory.
