Softball Splits GNAC Twinbill with Lasell

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team earned a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader split with the Lasers of Lasell University Sunday afternoon at the Shea Softball Complex. The Falcons took game one by a final score of 6-1, but the Lasers bounced back to take the nightcap, 6-5, despite a seventh-inning rally by the hosts.

Breanna Saldivar (Middletown, Conn.) recorded a day for the Falcons, going 3-for-7 with a double, a triple, two RBI, and four runs scored. Janelle Franklin (Middletown, Conn.) also recorded a three-hit day for the blue-and-white, while Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) and Angelina Ramada (North Branford, Conn.) added two hits apiece.

Following today's two-hit performance, Geloso is now four hits shy of recording her 100th career hit. 

Freshman Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) earned the win in game one for the Falcons after allowing one run on five hits while striking out three over 5.1 innings.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • Albertus' first two runs of the game came in the bottom of the second as Saldivar cleared the bases with a one-out double to left center. Karissa Kerrs (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and Geloso got things started for the hosts with a walk and a single to set up Saldivar. 
  • The Falcons struck again an inning later behind a RBI double from Ava Gladwin (Guilford, Conn.), which allowed Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) to cross home after she ignited the inning with a two-out triple down the right-field line. 
  • Albertus extended its lead to five, 5-0, over the Lasers behind a two-run inning highlighted by a bases-loaded walk, allowing Geloso to score, and a RBI fielder choice from Peyton Davis (North Haven, Conn.). 
  • Lasell finally broke through in the top of the sixth, scoring its first run behind a RBI grounder from Katie Hopkins. With one out and a runner on first, Albertus went to reliever Emma Signore (Guilford, Conn.), who forced a groundout to end the inning.
  • Albertus countered Lasell in the home half of the inning with a one-run RBI single to left from Ramada to extend the hosts' lead to five, 6-1.
  • Lasell was unable to ignite a seventh-inning rally as the visitors went down 1-2-3 to end the game.

AT THE PLATE

  • Saldivar and Franklin finished game one with a team-high two hits, while Saldivar led the Falcons in RBI with two.
  • Ramada, Smith, Gladwin, and Geloso also tallied a hit in the victory. 

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • Lasell jumped out to an early two-run advantage in the top of the first, but a three-run rally from the Falcons put the hosts ahead by one, 3-2.
  • Three straight singles from Saldivar, Franklin, and Ramada loaded the bases for Davis, who drove in Saldivar on a fielder's choice before a one-out single from Arent cleared the bases for the two-run RBI. 
  • After a quiet second inning, Albertus made some noise in the bottom of the third as Geloso recorded the RBI single that doubled the Falcons' lead, 4-2.
  • The Lasers made things interesting in the top of the fourth by regaining the lead, 6-4, behind a four-run inning that included a two-run triple to center field from Ally Kirck.
  • Albertus' final rally of the game came in the bottom of the seventh as Saldivar led off the inning, reaching first on a fielding error by the left fielder before finding crossing home following back-to-back groundouts from Franklin and Ramada. 
  • Davis kept the momentum going forcing a walk, but a groundout to the second baseman ended the seventh-inning rally with the Falcons coming up short, 6-5, to the Lasers.

The softball team returns to the diamond on Thursday, April 20th, with a non-conference doubleheader at home against the Mariners of Mitchell College. Game times are set for 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m at Shea Softball Complex.
