Softball Splits Doubleheader with MSOE and UWP, Jabs Pitches Complete Game to Shutout Raiders

LEESBURG, Fla. — Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) denied the University of Wisconsin-Platteville a single run through seven innings of work and delivered a 2-0 triumph over the Raiders, her second victory of the season, after the Albertus Magnus College softball team dropped the first game on Monday, 9-0, to the Milwaukee School of Engineering in Florida. The right-handed pitcher only gave up four hits, served up a quartet of strikeouts and retired a trio of Pioneers to close out a complete game of pitching.

Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.) brought home the only two Falcons across both games for the late-game victory and snapped Wisconsin-Platteville's seven-game win streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • MSOE and Albertus Magnus went two scoreless innings until the Raiders bats came alive in a six-run third inning ignited by Alyssa Jacobson, who drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Raiders the lead.
  • Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) stood on the mound for the Falcons and only faced three batters in the first inning and four in the second. The left-hander delivered three-straight ground outs to open the contest but got into hot water in the following frame with two Raiders on the bags off a single to centerfield and an error by first base. A double play by shortstop Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.), Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) and Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) on second and first base cleared two batters and only left one Raider on base before a groundout closed out the scoreless inning.
  • Raiders tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning off a triple by Celine Pacheco.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With two outs on the board, two Pioneers got on base off a single to centerfield and an error by first base but Jabs wiggled out of the first inning with her first strikeout swinging.
  • The Falcons put a stop to the scoreless drought for either two as Laforte singled to centerfield and allowed Savinelli and Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) to return home in the fifth frame. Smith led off the inning with a walk before Savinelli stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and also drew four balls to land on base.
  • In the bottom of the fifth inning, Felicia Teubert grounded out to Jabs off a sacrifice bunt to allow Mia Savage to advance to second, but the sophomore struck out her third swinging Pioneer.
  • With the bases loaded, the Falcons had a chance to pad the lead as Megan Cross (North Haven, Conn.) stepped to the plate and reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing pinch hitter Lucy Rodriguez (New Britain, Conn.) and Molkenthin to advance, but Arent was thrown out at home off the throw from shortstop Taylor Roughen to the catcher Payton Marvin.
