Softball Shutout Regis in Doubleheader to Remain Perfect in GNAC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) stuck out a career-high 10 batters in a complete-game victory, 3-0, in the first matchup against the visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference Regis College Pride on Sunday. The Falcons completed the doubleheader sweep with a 8-0 game two victory.

Jabs only allowed a single hit in seven innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After only facing four batters in the top of the first inning, Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) landed on base after an error by first base to lead off the inning, followed by one-out walks drawn by Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) and Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) to load the bases. Scheid stole second to get into scoring position before Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.) laced a double to right field, driving in Scheid and Edwards to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
  • Albertus maintained its two-run lead until another double by the hosts, this time off the bat of Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) to drive in pinch runner Jazmyn Browne (Bristol, Conn.), who put on the gas from first base.
  • That would be all the offense Falcon starter Jabs would need, as she allowed just one hit while striking out 10 batters, for a career-high, in a complete-game victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Just as in the first game, Scheid reached base to lead off the bottom of the first inning, this time on an infield single. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) would drive in Scheid with a double to center field, and Smith would later score on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
  • The Pride would collect single hits in the second and third innings, followed by their most serious scoring threat in the fourth inning. With one out, Jaylene Deslauriers and Mya Gaspie would reach base on infield singles, and then Grace Motto would draw a two-out walk to load the bases. However, Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.) ended the inning with a strikeout.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Falcons loaded the bases before Scheid drove in two runs with a single to center field. She would advance to third base on the play and came in to score on a single up the middle by Smith.
  • Lexi Nichols hit a two-out triple to center field in the top of the fifth inning but was stranded at third base. The Falcons closed out the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, beginning with a leadoff home run by Molkenthin. After Albertus Magnus loaded the bases with two singles and a walk, pinch hitter Megan Cross (North Haven, Conn.) drew a walk to force in a run, and Kaitlyn Cunningham (Lakeville, Conn.) scored on a wild pitch to end the contest via the eight-run rule.
