Softball Remains Undefeated In Conference After Sweep Of NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team remained undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), sweeping New England College, 4-0 and 9-6 on Saturday afternoon.

In game one, Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) hit two triples and had two RBI and Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with two runs, including a home run. Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) pitched a complete game shutout with four strikeouts.

The second game featured nine doubles, including four players with two. Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) went 2-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) went 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) opened the game with a walk in the top of the first and Edwards tripled her home to give Albertus the early 1-0 lead. 
  • Jabs retired the side in order in the first and left two on base in the second before Edwards hit her second RBI triple in the top of the third to score Arent, making it a 2-0 game.
  • In the top of the fifth, Arent notched her first extra-base hit of the game when she doubled with two outs to score Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.). 
  • Arent put an exclamation point on the win with a homer to center field with one out.
  • Jabs did not allow a runner past second base the entire game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus jumped out of the gate, scoring three runs in the first as Molkenthin hit a two-run double with one out that scored Arent, who walked, and Edwards, who singled to make it a 2-0 game. With two outs, Smith hit a single to left to plate Molkenthin, making it a 3-0 game.
  • On the mound, Arent didn't allow a run for the first two innings and the Falcons added a run in the third on an RBI double from Petruzziello, making it a 4-0 game.
  • The Pilgrims responded with three runs and four hits in the bottom of the third, highlighted by a two-run single by Sonia Garcia.
  • The Falcons bumped their lead back up to three runs as Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.) hit a two-run double in the top of the fourth and made it a 6-3 game.
  • NEC tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth, the Pilgrims scored three more to tie the game as Julia Maker hit a two-run triple followed by an RBI single by Surena Montero to tie the game.
  • Albertus pulled away in the final two innings, as the Falcons hit three doubles in the inning. Laforte started the rally with one out with a double to left-center and Smith drove her in on the next at bat. Two batters later, Petruzziello hit her second RBI double of the game to score Smith. The Falcons scored one more run in the seventh as Scheid doubled to lead off the inning, followed by a double from Molkenthin, making it a 9-6 game.
  • Arent sat down the Pilgrims in order in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep.

  • Albertus has outscored its opponents, 41-7 in GNAC play.
  • The Falcons are one of three undefeated teams in the GNAC, all of which reside in the South Division.
  • It was the first meeting between the two teams.
  • The 6-0 start in conference is the best since the team won its first 14 contests in GNAC play in 2022.

 

UP NEXT

  • It's a battle of the conference unbeaten in the South Division as Johnson and Wales come  to Shea on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The Wildcats are also 6-0 in GNAC play.
