Softball Sweeps Saint Joseph's (Me.) Behind Jabs, Scheid

Softball Sweeps Saint Joseph's (Me.) Behind Jabs, Scheid

STANDISH, Me. - Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) pitched a masterful performance in game one and the Albertus Magnus College softball team scored six runs in game two as the Falcons swept Saint Joseph's College (Maine) 2-1 in eight innings and 9-4 on Sunday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.

In game one, Jabs pitched a complete game, giving up just one earned run on four hits while striking out six. A Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.) sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth proved to be the game winner.

In game two, Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) went 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI and Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and a run as the Falcons had a season-high 16 hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • It was a pitchers' duel throughout as Jabs and Saint Joseph's starting pitcher Lydia Goodnough matched zeros through the first five innings.
  • Jabs struck out two batters in the bottom of the first inning after a one-out single and twice retired eight straight batters between the third and fifth innings and between the sixth and eighth innings.. She had five innings where she set down the batters in order, including the seventh and eighth innings.
  • Goodnough allowed two runners on base in the first inning and allowed just two more until the sixth inning when the Falcons finally broke the scoreless tie. After walks to both Arent and Laforte, both runners advanced on a groundout. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) came to the plate and hit a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Arent to make it a 1-0 game. The Monks answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single from Chantelle Bouchard, but Jabs was able to get the final two batters out to preserve the tie.
  • Albertus put together a run in the top of the eighth as Scheid was placed on second and advanced to third on a groundout from Arent. Laforte drove a ball to left field and it allowed Scheid to score to give the Falcons the 2-1 lead. Jabs didn't let a ball out of the infield in the bottom of the eighth with two infield pop ups and a groundout to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

With the bases loaded, Enjem and Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) hit back-to-back RBI singles, making it a 6-2 game.
