Dominant Pitching, Timely Offense Lifts Softball To Sweep Of USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College pitching staff gave up just one run over the course of 13 innings of work in a doubleheader sweep of the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Wednesday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) twinbill. Albertus won game one, 11-0 in six innings, and took game two, 3-1.

In game one, the Falcons allowed just two hits behind the performance of Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) and Ema Signore (East Haven, Conn.). The Falcons had enough offense as Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a triple, three RBI and a run. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with three runs, and Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

Skylar Arent pitched a complete game in game two, throwing seven innings and striking out four and allowing just one earned run on six hits. Erin Molkenthin (East Haddam, Conn.) led the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

The Falcons have now won their last five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After both teams left a runner on base in the first inning, the Falcons opened up the scoring in the second inning as Smith walked and Edwards singled to open up the inning. A stolen base from Edwards put runners on second and third before a ground out by Julianna Petruzziello (West Haven, Conn.) made it a 1-0 game. Amelia Boulli followed with an RBI single to give Albertus the two-run lead.
  • Both teams threatened to score in the third inning as they both left two runners on base. However, the Falcons converted in the top of the fourth. Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) led off with a single and Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) and Arent walked to load the bases. Laforte then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to make it a 5-0 game. A sacrifice fly from Molkenthin scored Laforte and two batters later Edwards hit an RBI triple that scored Smith, who singled one at bat prior.
  • The Falcons pitching staff sat down the Blue Jays in order in the fourth and fifth innings and the bats were able to put the game away in the top of the sixth, behind a bases loaded walk, a two-run error and an RBI single by Amanda Savinelli (New Haven, Conn.).
