Softball Drops Two To Marywood, Mount Union

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team lost two games on Monday, falling to Marywood, 8-6 and Mount Union, 9-3 during the team's spring break trip.

Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) went 4-for-7 over the course of the two gams, including her first career home run against Mount Union. She also drove in three runs. Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) also connected on the long ball against Mount Union and had two doubles against Marywood while driving in two runs and scoring twice over the two gams.

Mikaela Schwippert (Whippany, N.J.) had five hits on the day, including a 3-for-4 performance against Marywood where she drove in two runs. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) went 2-for-3 against Marywood, scoring three runs and driving in two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus drew three walks to open the bottom of the first and Schwippert drove in Smith with an RBI single to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. However, the Pacers were able to get out of the jam after allowing just the one run.
  • Marywood responded with a run of its own in the top of the second, but the Falcons responded with three more in the bottom of the third. Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) opened the inning with a single and moved to second after Jorja Trocchio (Wallingford, Conn.) reached on an error. Smith followed with a two-run double to put the Falcons up, 3-1. Two batters later, Arent doubled to score Smith to make it a 4-1 Albertus lead.
  • The Pacers scored one more in the top of the third on a Tori Para RBI double and then followed with five more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 7-4 lead. Para, Marissa Hoffman and Riley Marshall hit three straight RBI singles for the Pacers to highlight the inning.
  • Smith led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk, and advanced to second on a single from Schwippert, setting the plate for Carangelo who hit an RBI single to score Smith to make it a 7-5 game.
  • The Pacers scored one more in the top of the sixth and Schwippert had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to drive in Arent, who doubled to lead off the inning as Albertus cut its deficit to 8-6.
  • Ema Signore (East Haven, Conn.) got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh for the Falcons without allowing a run. In the botto of the inning, the Falcons put runners on first and second after a single by Gabby Rubino (Southington, Conn.) and Gianna Carrano, (West Haven, Conn.) but the Falcons were unable to put a run across.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Falcons were retired in order in the top of the first, Mount Union scored two in the bottom of the inning, including a leadoff home run from Sydney Mercer as the Raiders took a 2-0 lead after the first frame.
  • In the top of the second, Carangelo hit her first career home run, taking Mount Union starter Chloe Bird's pitch over the left centerfield fence to make it a 2-1 game.
  • The Raiders scored one run in the second and two more in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
  • Schwippert and Carangelo hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth inning wih one out as the Falcons cut their deficit to 5-2.
  • Arent cut the deficit to 5-3 in the top of the sixth with her first home run of the season, and third of her career as she hit a one-out homer to right field.
  • The Raiders put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out rally that plated four runs, including a two-run double by Mercer.
