Eight Straight For Softball As Falcons Sweep Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College softball team kept on rolling, as the Falcons extended their winning streak to eight games with a 7-0, 6-4 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) sweep of Mitchell College on Friday afternoon.

Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) struck out nine in 5.2 shutout innings in game one to earn her fifth win of the season. Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with a triple, a run and two RBI. Gabby Rubino (Southington, Conn.) went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

In game two, Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) struck out eight batters in six innings, moving her way up to third all-time in program history with 199 strikeouts. She also went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run while Isabelle Smith  (Meriden, Conn.) went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The Falcons remain in first place in the GNAC South Division.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams went scoreless in the first as Jabs was able to get out of a jam with runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning with a strikeout.
  • In the top of the second, the Falcons put two runs on the board. After a single by Mikaela Scwhippert (Whippany, N.J.) and a double by Carangelo, a ball was misplayed off the bat of Edwards, allowing Scwhippert to score. Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) followed with an RBI groundout to make it a 2-0 game.
  • Jabs got out of a bases loaded one-out jam in the bottom of the third striking out the final two batters to preserve the shutout.
  • The big inning for the Falcons came in the top of the sixth as they scored five runs. Gianna Carrano opened with a single followed by a double by Arent, and a throw back into the infield allowed Carrano to score. Scwhippert followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-0 game. After back-to-back singles by Edwards and Boulli, Barreiro tripled down the right field line to clear the bases to make it a 6-0 game. Rubino added an RBI single for the final run for Albertus.
  • Ema Signore (North Haven, Conn.) pitched the last 1.1 innings, striking out one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Arent and Mitchell starter Katelynn Goodman kept the game scoreless through the first four innings. Both teams threatened to score in the second as the Falcons left runners on the corner and the Mariners left the bases loaded. Arent struck out the final two batters of the second.
  • Both teams broke through with three runs apiece in the fifth inning. In the top of the inning, Barreiro led off with a double. After a single by Rubino, a wild pitch allowed Tessa D'Aquila - who pinch ran for Barreiro - to score. Smith followed with an RBI double, while an RBI groundout by Arent made it a 3-0 game.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Brook Whitmarsh had an RBI double and Madison Cole hit a double that scored two runs.
  • Albertus took the lead back in the top of the sixth as a bunt from Boulli scored Carangelo, who doubled to lead off the inning. An RBI groundout by Barreiro scored Edwards, who reached on a fielder's choice.
  • Scwhippert added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI double.
  • Signore retired the side in order in the seventh to earn the save.

  • Arent leads the GNAC with nine wins and both her and Jabs are tied for second in the GNAC with 60 strikeouts.
  • This is the longest winning streak in program history since the 2022 team won 24 games in a row.
  • The Falcons have five shutouts over their eight-game winning streak.
  • Albertus is 9-6 all-time against Mitchell.
  • Scwhippert is fourth in the GNAC with 23 RBI, followed by Edwards with 20.
