Senior Day Sweep: Softball Dominates Dean

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -  It was a senior day to remember for the Albertus Magnus College softball team as it swept Dean, 4-0 and 7-2 on Friday afternoon at the Shea Softball Complex in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader.

Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.), Colleen Edwards (Clinton, Conn.) and Ema Signore (North Haven, Conn.) were all honored prior to the doubleheader.

Arent earned the win in game one, pitching five scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing just five hits. In game two, she was pitched around in every plate appearance, drawing four walks. Arent also moved up to second all-time in strikeouts at Albertus and now has 218 in her career.

Karla Carangelo (Cheshire, Conn.) was 4-for-6 on the day with two doubles and a triple while scoring twice and driving in three runs. Izzy Barreiro (Brookfield, Conn.) drove in three runs on the day. Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.) had three runs on the day and Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) scored two runs and drove in one on the day.

Annabelle Jabs (East Hartland, Conn.) earned a save in game one, and picked up the win in relief in game two as she pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless relief on the day.

Signore started game two, striking out four in 3.2 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons got on the board as Smith and Carrano hit back-to-back doubles to open the bottom of the first to make it a 1-0 game. Three batters later, Carangelo hit the third double of the inning, driving in Carrano to make it a 2-0 game. The Falcons added one more run on an error by Dean.
  • After retiring the side in order in the first, Arent got out of a bases loaded jam without allowing a run and left two more runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth, keeping the shutout alive.
  • The Falcons added another run in the bottom of the sixth. Amelia Boulli (Torrington, Conn.) doubled with two outs and Barreiro followed with an RBI single to left, making it a 4-0 game.
  • Jabs came in the sixth inning and pitched two innings of perfect relief for her first save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In a scoreless first inning, Sigore struck out two batters in the top half while the Falcons had runners in scoring position in the bottom half but failed to plate a run.
  • Signore got out of a jam in the top of the second inning after two errors in the inning, but did not allow a run.
  • Albertus got on the board in the bottom of the third inning as Carrano singled followed by a walk to Arent. Schwippert's ground out scored Carrano and Carangelo's single plated Arent for a 2-0 Albertus lead.
  • The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the fourth with RBI singles by Emily Kilpatrick and Xandra Silva.
  • Boulli singled to start the bottom of the fourth. After Tessa D'Aquila (Old Saybrook, Conn.) came into pinch run, Smith ripped a single to center to score D'Aquila as she beat the throw home, giving Albertus the 3-2 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, the Falcons pitched around Arent for the fourth time with a walk to start the inning. Two batters later, Carangelo laced a triple to the fence in left field to score a run. Edwards followed with a walk and Boulli hit an RBI single followed by two-run double to deep center field by Barreiro to give Albertus a commanding 7-2 lead.
  • Jabs came in relief in the fourth inning and pitched 3.1 innings, striking out five and allowed just three hits. She earned her eighth win of the season.

Arent had a hit in game one and has 99 hits in her career.

Albertus remains undefeated all-time against Dean and are 12-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.

The Falcons finished their regular season 14-3 at home.
