Women's Basketball Weekly Preview: Sage & No. 4 Amherst

This Week: The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team went 1-1 last week, defeating in-state rival Mitchell, 61-50, at home to open the year before falling on the road versus Division I foe Yale. In the victory against the Mariners, Albertus won the battle of the boards, 44-33, and dished out 14 assists on 21 made field goals. Versus Mitchell, the Falcons never trailed in the game and led by as many as 14 early in the fourth quarter. This week, the team has a pair of non-conference tilts, hosting Sage on Thursday before traveling to square off with nationally-ranked Amherst on Saturday.

Last Meeting with the Gators: The two teams last battled in February of 2013. The Falcons outlasted Sage, 66-60, in a contest that saw four ties and five lead changes. The deciding factor in this game was points in the paint, as Albertus held a decisive, 36-12, advantage. Albertus Magnus guard Olivia Sutherland is one of two Falcons still on the roster from the last matchup. She scored seven points and added a game-high six assists in 35 minutes of action.

Last Meeting with the Lord Jeffs: Saturday's meeting will be the first between the two teams since December of 2013. In that clash, Amherst scored an 81-55 win in New Haven. Offensively, forward Chelsea Sherrod is the top returner for the Falcons, scoring seven points and pulling down six rebounds for Albertus. Amherst outrebounded the hosts, 45-31, and held the Falcons to just over 37 percent shooting. The Lord Jeffs turned 19 Albertus turnovers into 31 points and had a commanding 21-1 edge in second-chance points.

Albertus Notes:
- Freshman Deja Ward had a solid first week of collegiate action for Albertus Magnus, averaging 14 points a contest and shooting 50 percent from three-point range. In the season opener, Ward netted a team-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, highlighted by hitting three shots from beyond the arc.
- Through two games, Albertus Magnus is shooting just under 39 percent from three-point range. Sutherland and Ward are tied for the team-lead with three treys apiece.
- Albertus has lost two straight road non-conference games and won two out of league games in a row at home.
- Senior forward Kelsey Pendagast is leading the team with eight rebounds per game. This season, 13 of her 16 boards have come on the defensive end.
- Sophomore forward and reigning GNAC Rookie of the Year Olivia Bolden is picking up where she left off, averaging over nine points and four rebounds per game thus far.
