West Hartford, Conn. – Behind a four goal performance from sophomore Korina Zelaya (Trumbull, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College women's lacrosse team picked up its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference win of the season as the Falcons defeated in-state foe Saint Joseph's (Conn.), 13-6, on Wednesday evening at USJ Lacrosse Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Albertus Magnus opened the game with the early 3-0 advantage following three different goals from Aida Sarr (Bronx, N.Y.), Zelaya and Nikki Kern (Wallingford, Conn.) over the first nine minutes of play. Saint Joseph's (Conn.) broke its silence at the 18:05 mark as Hannah Lemek scored to cut to cut the Falcons' lead to within two, 3-1.

Shortly after, Zelaya scored her second goal of the game to push the visitors' lead back up to three, 4-1. However, Saint Joseph's would cut the lead in half, 4-2, heading into halftime.

Saint Joseph's (Conn.) continued its momentum into the second as the hosts brought the score to within one, 4-3, after Mary Joerg found the back of the net for her first goal of the game. Three minutes later, a goal from Courtney Cacace (Brookfield, Conn.) sparked a 6-0 run to push the visitors up 10-3 with 15:44 remaining. During the run, Kern scored three of the six goals all within two minutes.

Over the next three minutes of play. Saint Joseph's (Conn.) put together a 2-1 run to bring the score to 11-5, but the Falcons secured the win as the visitors closed out regulation with a 2-1 run, 13-6.

INSIDE THE STATS

• Along with her four goals, Zelaya also registered an assist to total five points.
• Sophomore Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.) earned the "W" in net for the Falcons as she recorded four saves on eight shots.
• Grace Vestro also made an appearance in net for the Falcons in the last 13 minutes of play.
• Hannah Lemek led the offensive unit for the Blue Jays with three goals.
• Albertus Magnus held a 21-11 edge in ground balls as well as outshot the hosts 37-13, but the Blue Jays won the draw control battle 11-10.
