Arent Throws Gem In Game Two As Softball Splits With Mitchell

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Skylar Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) pitched a complete game and had two hits in a 4-1 game two win over Mitchell in a split of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader. Mitchell won game one, 6-4.

Arent pitched seven innings allowing just four hits with one earned run and a strikeouts without a walk. She was also 2-for-3 with a run. Paige Scheid (Cedar Grove, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with a run in game two.

In game one, Arent was 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run and Hailey Laforte (Branford, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams swapped runs in the first inning as Brooke Whitemarsh had an RBI single for the Mariners in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, a leadoff single by Scheid and walk to Arent put runners on  Laforte hit a sharp line drive to Whitmarsh, but in an attempt to double off Arent at first, Whitmarsh threw the ball away, allowing Scheid to score.
  • The Mariners scored three more times in the top of the second which included RBI singles from Emma LaBreck and Jenna Bennett.
  • Albertus cut its deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the third on a two-run single by Isabelle Smith that scored Laforte, who singled and Arent who led off the inning with a double. 
  • Hannah Lemke gave Mitchell two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Arent closed the gap with a two-out single to score pinch runner Jazmyn Browne (Bristol, Conn.), but the Falcons left runners on the corner. Mitchell got the first two batters out in the bottom of the seventh, but three straight walks loaded the bases. However a ground out ended the game, giving Mitchell the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After Arent reitired the side in order in the  top of the first, she and Scheid opened the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles and both came around to score on an Erin Molkenthin RBI groundout and an RBI single from Isabelle Smith (Meriden, Conn.).
  • Arent didn't allow a baserunner until the third inning, which would also be the only inning the Mariners scored in as Gemma Landry hit an RBI single to cut the Albertus lead to 2-1.
  • On the mound, Arent allowed just two more base runners after the third inning and the bats gave her support as Julianna Petruzziello (West Haven, Conn.) hit an RBI double followed by a fielder's choice by Gianna Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) that made it a 4-1 game.

  • Scheid has a hit in 13 of the last 14 games. She has had a leadoff hit in the last three games. She is third in the GNAC with 40 hits
  • Albertus holds a slight 7-6 lead in the all-time series.
  • It was the second complete game for Arent on the season.
